I wonder if he found out how to do this by accident.

Essentially it’s a long rubber snake in which the wave motion creates a bulge wave which runs along the snake and generates power at the end. Like the Windulum there are no mechanical parts to wear out and it’s hidden out at sea.

Been listening to this band all week and can’t get their songs out my head. Brilliantly simple sound although the guitarist is just making it sound simple. These 2 tracks are from the ‘Venus on Earth’ album and the second one, Sober Driver, has an almost annoyingly catchy chorus ‘you called me up because I’m sober and you wanted me to drive’ which is not well represented in this live version here but I dare you to listen to it and then not sing it for the next day.

In his new book “The End of Overeating” David Kessler presents some great facts as to why we can’t resist junk food. The key paragraph for me is…
“Highly palatable” foods — those containing fat, sugar and salt — stimulate the brain to release dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with the pleasure center, he found. In time, the brain gets wired so that dopamine pathways light up at the mere suggestion of the food, such as driving past a fast-food restaurant, and the urge to eat the food grows insistent. Once the food is eaten, the brain releases opioids, which bring emotional relief. Together, dopamine and opioids create a pathway that can activate every time a person is reminded about the particular food. This happens regardless of whether the person is hungry.”
His solution: choose a route that doesn’t take you past a junk food store. All that research and then he states the bleeding obvious.

with thanks to @aaronbassett for the tweet: this video is amazing and already seems to be spreading like wildfire. Great skill, with just as great camera work, editing and music.

Brilliant simple idea for generating power- have long stalk full of piezoelectric materials that generate electricity as the stalk bends over. Put a ball at the top and have the wind blow it about. Just proves how many ideas are out there waiting to click.

Amazing track by Dirk Powell. Sadly no decent quality versions on-line except this live version on YouTube.

Fed up with life under a community and government that has evolved over hundreds of years? Why not start your own off-shore country from scratch to suit the modern world. What would you do? What laws would you set and what would you change. Although I’m an optimist by nature I reckon it would soon dissolve into a dictatorial nightmare through the human nature determining that anyone who wants to be in power should be disqualified from the job. How about everyone has to spend mandatory time working in decision making roles in the same way as jury service?

Amazing to think these recordings of Saturn’s Auroras were made by the Cassini spacecraft on it’s flypast.
This is taken from the always interesting Nasa site with more recordings here.
